Evolution of a Mash-Up

Hello everyone and thanks to all of you who voted for me! Thanks to all the artists on Draw2d2 for contributing! This week, (and I feel like a broken record) was full of fantastic pieces! Each Mash-up keeps getting better and better. Can’t wait to see Batman next week!

So, as my duty and obligation here is my evolution post. My processes was minimal this week, building the new site took longer than anticipated, and U of I wouldn’t reschedule my sisters graduation around Draw2d2′s schedule! Oh well. So this week will be short and sweet like my decision on this piece.

Although I didn’t have much time to draw I worked most of my idea out in my head. I started with the idea of Salacious Crumb as Barbossa’s monkey. At first I thought of maybe just doing a portrait of the two of them and being done with it. But I wanted to go at least maybe a little bit further. I wanted to include some other elements to ground the portrait into either the Star Wars universe, or the pirates.

I then thought I would make Barbossa into Jaba and include his waterpipe, and maybe a twi’lek dancer, I was even thinking about including Bib Fortuna! But I was afraid this would take too much time and I only had 2 days.

So I simplified and started to draw the portrait of Barbossa and Salacious Crumb….Once I got that…I thought…Heck, why not add a couple sail barges in the background to add that connection between Star Wars and Pirates.  I thought they were a good fit.  I always thought of them as futuristic pirate ships anyway.

Fortunately I came up with a decent sketch right off the bat. I then cleaned it up to a final. Here is my final sketch. I took this sketch and projected larger to an illustration board for my final.

I knew I would work out some of the unfinished aspects of this piece as I painted. The final illustration was completed in acrylic paint and color pencil on illustration board.

Thanks again to all of you who voted and all the other artists! Keep up the great work!
